Privacy policy

wordsasbirds is a collective mood map. You contribute two words for how you feel and they join a live murmuration of everyone else's. We collect as little as possible to make that work, we never sell your data, and there are no advertising trackers.

The short version.

No account, no name, no email required to use the app.
We store the two words you submit, a random device id, and (if you allow it) the city/country your device is in.
We never collect or store your precise GPS location.
Push notifications and location are optional and off until you grant permission.
We don't sell your data or share it for advertising.

Who we are

What we collect

Your murmurs. The two feeling-words you choose, with a timestamp. These are anonymous.
A random device identifier. When you first open the app we generate a random id and keep it on your device. It lets us group your own murmurs into your personal "you" view and apply fair-use limits. It is not linked to your real identity.
Coarse location (optional). If you grant location permission, your device's coordinates are converted to a city and country so your murmur can appear on the city and nation maps. We store only the resulting city and country names — not the underlying GPS coordinates.
Push token (optional). If you allow notifications, your device's push token is stored so we can send occasional mood prompts. You can revoke this anytime in your device settings.
Basic analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate, anonymous usage (sessions, time on page, approximate region). This is not tied to your murmurs or your device id.

How we use it

To render the live murmuration and the city, nation, world and "you" views.
To send optional push notifications you have opted into.
To prevent abuse and keep the shared map fair (rate limiting).
To understand, in aggregate, how the app is used so we can improve it.

We do not use your data for advertising and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.

Permissions

Location and notifications are always optional. The app works without them — you simply won't appear on the city/nation maps or receive prompts. You can grant or revoke either permission at any time in your device's system settings.

Service providers

We rely on Google Firebase / Google Cloud for hosting, the database that stores murmurs, and Firebase Cloud Messaging for push notifications, and on Google Analytics for aggregate usage stats. Your data is processed on their infrastructure subject to Google's privacy terms. We do not share your data with any other third parties.

Data retention

Murmurs feed a live, decaying map and are retained only as long as needed to operate the service. Push tokens are removed when they become invalid or when you uninstall the app. You can ask us to delete data associated with your device id at any time by emailing admin@realizerlabs.com.

Children

wordsasbirds is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your choices & rights

Use the app without granting location or notifications.
Revoke either permission anytime in device settings.
Request deletion of data tied to your device id by emailing us.

Changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be highlighted in the app.
